Milwaukee’s Finest to merge under Wisconsin’s Finest Pilot Program set to launch in Madison

MILWAUKEE – After eight years of empowering youth in Milwaukee County by providing an equal opportunity for financial assistance through scholarships, Milwaukee’s Finest Scholarship Foundation (MFSF) is thrilled to announce its decision to merge into an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

MILWAUKEE – Today Milwaukee’s Finest Scholarship Foundation (MFSF), Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced the recipients of the 2022 Scholarship Awards.

Mayor Johnson was joined by Jerel Austin Ballard, founder of the Milwaukee’s Finest Scholarship Foundation. Assisting with the bell ringing were two scholarship recipients for 2021, Marquette University students William Holmes, a Rufus King High School graduate, and Joshua Wilder, a Riverside High School graduate.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's Finest Scholarship Foundation announced Saturday, July 15, the recipients of the 2021 scholarship awards. The awards were handed out to the recipients at Milwaukee City Hall.  In partnership with city officials, local businesses, organizations and community members, the foundation awarded ten local high school seniors with the Milwaukee's Finest scholarships.

Milwaukee’s Finest Offers Scholarships to MPS Graduates

It began with a phone call at 4 a.m. At the time, Jerel Ballard had an internship in Washington D.C. on Capitol Hill. As a college student at Columbia in Chicago, Ballard was figuring out how to afford tuition. It was then an idea struck and without much thought, he called his friend, Kalilah Ezell-Doyle, who was back home sleeping in Milwaukee.

Jerel Ballard was settling into his dream school when he got the letter. It came near the end of 2013, from the registrar. He was $5,000 short. At Columbia College Chicago, Ballard had expected to be challenged academically and socially, but not financially. He remembered his aid letter spelling out a $38,000 award from the institution, plus other scholarships. He thought he had a full ride.

Milwaukee’s Finest Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to students up to $1,000 to help with incidental costs like transportation or books, and it is geared toward those who come from disadvantaged situations.
